CSM FASHION DEISGN WOMENSWEAR EXHIBITION CURATION WITH JENNY HIRONS, ALEX PRIOR, HOUMAN MOMTAZIAN AND AMELIE DERVELOY

From the beginning of the year we have been collaborating with each other on curating the Fashion degree show in Charing Cross. The graduates who designed the show last year are now designing the catalogue and we will be inheriting the catalogue next year. We’ve developed ideas via numerous meetings with the fashion students and the catalogue designers. The meetings have consisted of group discussions and visual presentations. We’ve tried to meet with the catalogue designers as much as possible, in order to maintain cohesion between the exhibition and the catalogue. The word Network has become the overall theme, addressing the year group as a network of individuals.

PORTFOLIOS:

Each student will present two A4 images or text extracts from their portfolio which will be framed, so every individual has it’s own frame. This idea has developed from the way portfolios were exhibited last year. Portfolios were kept in a library and supplied, on request, by librarians. This created queues and the students were unhappy about presenting their entire portfolios due to privacy issues.
We have decided to look into the individual’s research and create clusters of related research within the bigger network. The frames on the wall will be displayed according to the research based clusters and so will the garments.

SHOES AND ACCESSORIES:

We have thought of using breeze blocks as a way to display shoes and accessories and vinyl cutting for contacts. We may have a shop were students have made an item using their materials this is representative of our ‘network’ theme, 50 individuals within one year group. Networks has helped as a point of reference when making curation decisions such as the necessary understanding of how each element within the exhibition will tie together.

SCREENING AT YIEWTOPIA- THE FIRST OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD, THOU SHALL NOT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.

As a small part of project as mentioned before, i decided to watch all of the Dekalog films (which are based on the ten commandments, Directed by Krzystof Kieslowski). I had the idea of screening all 10 films, each in a different location in order to bring people together through sharing each commandment (rule). The first screening happened on Sunday 16 May in Yiewtopia. I made ready some questionnaires  for the audience to fill out after watching the film. Unfortunately it was a rainy Sunday evening and not as many people as i hoped for turned up but it was still nice and our first screening in the shop!

IDEAS FOR YIEWSLEY

A couple of us have looked into making the furniture for the Yiewtopia shop out of found objects and pieces of wood. Here are some examples we have looked at.

POSTER DESIGN AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRINT MATTERS PUBLICATIONS

I designed the poster for Ken Garland’s lecture at CSM after visiting his house in Camden. The talk was on ‘VISUAL METAPHORS’ and the type on the poster became a metaphor on itself. I used other letters in the alphabet as a substitution for each letter on the poster.

As a group we decided to launch two publications after two lectures this term. The printed matters reflected each of our individual views on the lecture’s subjects. The first publication was ‘REFLECTIONS ON PRACTICE’  talk by Dan Rhatigan designed by Houman Momtazian & Rose Brissenden. My input was about a conversation and learning experience i had with a designer at the ICA, whilst they were producing a publication in house for an event. The second publication was for Douglas Bevans talk on ‘MAKING IS THINKING’. We each had to choose an adjective for ‘DESIGNER AS …..’. I chose to write about ‘DESIGNER AS PRACTICAL THINKER’. The publication was designed by Stassja Mrozinski.
